8th International Architecture Biennale
Arsenale Venezia, Italy | 90 m2
Prototype 1:1 - City of Culture
The 2002 Venice Architecture Biennale, NEXT, curated by Deyan Sudjic, brought together key projects that were to shape the face of the built environment for the decade to come.
The installation was a speculative half-scale mock-up of the soffit in the Hemeroteca building, one of the six cultural buildings in the City of Culture of Galicia, in Santiago de Compostela, designed by Eisenman Architects. The prototype, designed and constructed by Matteo Cainer was conceived as a space that would both give the sensation of being inside the space, and convey the conceptual approach that had been taken in the design of the actual building. The overlay of the Cartesian, medieval and topological surfaces of the city come together in a complex layered architectural space.
