Pavillon Spéciale 2011
Ecole Spéciale - Pavillon Spéciale - Cloud 9
An initial selection saw 45 practices among emerging and experimental architects being nominated by an international expert committee in the field of architecture made up of architects, curators, academics and magazine editors. An International Jury composed of six members: Benedetta Tagliabue (EMBT), Ben Van Berkel (UN studio), Kjetil Thorsen (SNØHETTA), Didier Fiuza Faustino (Mesarchitecture), Éric Justman (Architectures à vivre’, EXÉ) and Julia Peyton-Jones (Director of the Serpentine Gallery, London), produced a shortlist of five practices who were then asked to draw up a project.
The nominated architects were:
WINNER: Cloud 9 / ENRIC RUIZ-GELI
Project: Cloud 9 / ENRIC RUIZ-GELI, Barcelona, Spain
Studio Assistant: Issa Nthepe
From the Architect:
A pavilion especiale x Ecole speciale d’architecture = a pavilion for 675 students. Education is having students free but at the same time that they perform as a school, birds represent freedom, and they sometimes perform like “swarm” behaviour. Let’s imagine a pavilion of 675 birds, performing like a swarm, but first, let’s plant a tree. the green idea is that exhibitions, lectures, meetings, events, they all happen around the presence of a tree . . .(not to forget the green agenda we are all in, against global warming). Each student will design a bird, a personal design total 675 students, 675 birds.
